General Security And Its Importance In Retail

General Security

In the recent past, many retail stores have been forced to shut down because of shrinkage due to inadequate security. General security in retail is a very important aspect for generating maximum profits and smooth running as a whole. The following things need to be kept in mind whilst planning for security:

  • What needs protection?
  • What is the cost of that which needs protection?
  • What are the causes of the risk?
  • Are they caused by external or internal forces?
  • What is the cost of providing security?

It should always be kept in mind that the cost of providing security should never exceed the cost of the goods which need protection. There may be many causes for shrinkage in a store. However, it depends on the management to identify the one that contributes the most to shrinkage and work towards reducing the same.

General Security – the help of the storedesign

Some of the causes include shoplifting, employee theft, robbery, etc. Let us now see how the design of a store can help reduce such occurrences using General security:

Entry and exit points – The entry and exit points of a retail shop should always be guarded so that if a person is hurrying out after stealing any items, he or she can be caught at the entrance. The security personnel should be trained to always be alert for any abnormal behavior.

Installation of CCTVs – CCTVs should be installed at strategic locations so that all actions can be recorded and any shoplifting and employee thefts can be detected without hassles. With CCTV images loss prevention personnel and Police will have enough evidence in the court of law to convict the individuals concerned.

Lighting – In an attempt to make the store look attractive, many retailers restore to dim lighting. This not only creates opportunities for shoplifters, but is also not safe in terms of accidents. A well lit store makes it difficult for any shoplifter to operate easily.

Alarm system – Installation of emergency alarms is also a very effective method. None of the shoplifter like to be caught and if they are aware that the store is equipped with an alarm system, they will not try to do pick anything up.

Display of high valued items – There could be many high valued items in a store. They should always be displayed away from the entry and exit points and should be kept under lock and key, if possible.

Outside visibility – The outside of the store should be visible and not be covered with hoardings and parked vehicles. You should have a clear view of who is approaching the shop and their movements to stay alert of their actions.

There have been many reports of robbery in stores when the cash drawers are being emptied or cash taken to the bank. Cash should be transferred from the drawer to the safe at a time when there are no or few customers in the store. This should be done in the presence of security personnel and one of them should be a manager. When money is being deposited in the bank, this should be done very discreetly, so that no one notices. There should be another exit at the back which can be used for the purpose so as to avoid thefts.

General Security and the employee training

More and more number of owners are realizing the importance of General security in retail and are taking preventive measures to curb shrinkage. Another important aspect is employee training. They should be made aware of the risks involved in the business and the need to be vigilant at all times.
